There is a huge surge of Hong Kongers that have decided to move to the UK within the past two years.

According to an online study conducted by UKHK in 2022, 58.4% of respondents come with their children and amongst 48.2% of these children are primary school age, mainly between the ages of 10-12.

Many of these preteens have moved to the UK based on the decision of their parents and without a choice. Because of this, it can be difficult for them to react and adjust to the changes of their environment.

In addition to this, Hong Kong children already face difficulties in communication with teachers and classmates and learning in English (HK Well UK, 2022), making it harder for them to feel as though they can build friendships and relationships with others.

‘Pie and Fishball’ are activity guide zines. Through its illustrative story and activities, it hopes to bring joy and encourage Hong Kong preteens that are currently living in London to have fun learning about British culture, the English language, and have more confidence in approaching different aspects of their life in the UK.

Hong Kong parents that are living in the UK that have already followed Hong Konger’s in Britain’s Instagram page will be made aware of ‘Pie & Fishball’ through an Instagram carousel post.

More information can be found on the Hong Konger’s in Britain’s website and the form will be available in the ‘Pie & Fishball’ page.

When Hong Kong preteens go outside and around London to complete the activities of the zines, we advise parents to accompany their preteens when going to each location, but allow them to do activities independently.

These zines follow the story of Pie and Fishball, whom are the main characters. Pie, who is from the UK, guides Fishball, who is from Hong Kong, and the reader around the different locations around London in which the activities take place at.

Parents can also get involved too, and help capture memories throughout the activities!

We designed Instagram filters in collaboration with Hong Kongers in Britain. Each of these filters can be used in several locations through scanning a QR code.
